INWED Careers Event Blog

To celebrate International Women in Engineering Day (23rd June 2019), Caley Water took part in a careers event organised by the Women’s Engineering Society and Tony Gee & Partners LLP.  The careers event took place at Turnbull High School in Bishopbriggs, and provided an opportunity for S1/S2 pupils to meet engineers from a range of backgrounds and learn about the variety of engineering careers available.

Jenny was the Caley Water representative at the event, and presented some common wastewater issues to the pupils to encourage problem solving discussions. The impact of wastewater pollution incidents captured the attention of pupils and teachers alike, especially in light of the recent publicity about plastic pollution on beaches and in rivers. Jenny explained how Scottish Water, with the help of consultants including Caley Water, work to maintain and upgrade the wastewater network to improve the sustainability of wastewater networks and reduce sewage flooding and pollution. As well as encouraging pupils to consider engineering as a career, Jenny also provided insight to teachers interested in including Scottish Water’s ‘3 P’s – Keep the Cycle Running’ campaign (https://www.scottishwater.co.uk/cycle) in lesson plans to link engineering with environmental issues.
