Development Impact Assessment Programme

Project background

The Development Impact Assessment (DIA) is required as part of Scottish Water’s feasibility assessment to determine whether they can support a proposed development as part of the planning process

Service Provided

  • Liaise with developer to identify and quantify extent of proposed development; thereafter develop a bespoke modelling methodology specific to the development and catchment.
  • Undertake hydraulic assessments using industry standard software to identify predicted detriments on the downstream network.
  • Develop sustainable modelling solutions to mitigate against the predicted detriment.
  • Undertake catchment model build and verification projects, including survey management, if required.

Surface Water Flood Risk Assessments

Project background

Surface Water Flood Risk Assessments (FRAs) are used as part of the planning application process for new developments in order to ensure that no flooding occurs on site from surface water flows. Using Infoworks modelling software, Caley Water is able to provide the modelling resources required to predict where flooding may occur on proposed development sites and recommend solutions required to mitigate predicted flooding.

Service Provided

  • Desktop assessments using Infoworks modelling software to assess flood risk at proposed development sites.
  • Reviewing site plan data provided by clients to be used to build a surface water network model of  the proposed development site.
  • Running storm simulations through the model for various return periods.
  • Establishing flood risk based on maximum predicted flood volumes and calculating storage volumes required to mitigate flooding.
  • Providing an electronic report of methodology, key inputs and results to be used by clients as part of planning application process.

Internal flooding investigations

Project background

Caley Water has supported Scottish Water in investigating issues of internal flooding at properties. This is a key target for Scottish water to reduce the number of customers impacted by flooding and improve the level of drainage network performance.

Service Provided

  • Collection and review of information to determine the cause of flooding, including historical information, survey data, site visits, customer interviews and hydraulic modelling data.
  • Updating of hydraulic models to identify the risk of flooding at properties from the public sewers.
  • Develop solutions using hydraulic models to reduce flood risk within Scottish Water performance standards.
  • Undertake site visits to identify constraints, review buildability of solutions and complete design risk assessments.

United Utilities SUDS

Project background

Caley Water has supported United Utilities in their Price Review programme for AMP6. In conjunction with Halcrow, we developed sustainable solutions for high risk properties susceptible to flooding. The studies were for 8 flooding clusters in six catchments across North West England.

Service Provided

  • Undertake due diligence check on hydraulic models provided to determine suitability for project.
  • Review historical flooding records and identify any property basements.
  • Use hydraulic model to assess flood risk from the combined sewers at each cluster of flooding.
  • Identify areas of the catchment for surface water separation.

Lärjeån Storm Water Model

Project background

The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency proposed to Gothenburg Water that treatment should be provided at all known surface water discharge points to remove a range of pollutant loadings prior to discharge to the main watercourse.

Service Provided

  • Developed a robust hydraulic model of the storm water networks discharging to the Larjean.
  • Undertake hydrological assessment and prepare rainfall runoff model for analysis.
  • Determine the Land Use surface types within each storm water catchment.
  • Classification of the surfaces leading to each outlet point for application of appropriate pollutant loadings.

Model Maintenance Scoping Programme

Project background

Scottish Water holds a library of hydraulic models covering the majority of the urban areas of Scotland. Over the years many hydraulic models have been created and developed for specific catchment needs and project drivers.

Service Provided

  • Review and interrogation of historical modelling databases and reporting to establish the most current and up to date model.
  • Integration of models to establish sewered area models. Review and maintenance of clashing parameters to ensure that models were compatible.
  • Review existing model flags and undertake re-flagging exercise to current SW standards.
  • Model audit of critical parameters. Complete scoring matrix to determine confidence classification.

United Utilities PR14 Programme

Project background

Caley Water has supported United Utilities in their Price Review programme for AMP6. In conjunction with Halcrow, we developed schemes aimed at reducing spills from the sewerage network to watercourses in order to meet tightening water quality drivers. The studies were for 12 schemes in three catchments across North West England.

Service Provided

  • Undertake due diligence check on hydraulic models provided to determine suitability for project.
  • Review performance of existing model in terms of spill volume and network flooding.
  • Develop solutions to reduce spills at desired locations through an iterative process based on outputs from water quality analysis (RIOT).
  • Assess buildability of solutions and identify constraints in terms of any 3rd party issues.

Water of Leith Flood Alleviation

Project background

Edinburgh City Council (ECC) has undertaken works to improve the flood defences on the Water of Leith. Caley Water provided Horizons Hydro Engineering with design services and construction supervision to ensure the work was undertaken in accordance with Scottish Water standards and specifications.

Service Provided

  • Review and approval of all proposed amendments, alterations, diversions etc to all Scottish Water Assets over a 3km stretch of the Water of Leith river through central Edinburgh necessitated by the construction of concrete flood defence walls.
  • Assistance in design of diversion works on a stretch of 850 mm diameter Cast Iron Sewer and drawing up Method Statements for safe methods of working including Confined Space Working and Over-pumping.
  • Assistance in design of new access manholes on an existing 850mm diameter Cast Iron Sewer alongside the river required to facilitate Sewer Relining Works over an 800m stretch.
  • Assistance in design of diversion works on an existing 110mm diameter Water Main over a 50m stretch to allow construction of a new Pumping Station.

Drainage Area Studies

Project background

Drainage area studies (DAS) support the strategic planning for catchments and allow essential understanding of sewerage systems and their performance against social, environmental and operational targets.

Service Provided

  • Review existing data and undertake due diligence check on hydraulic models provided to determine suitability and critical areas within the model.
  • Review historical records and create a ‘model timeline’ to help identify model maintenance requirements.
  • Scope and manage manhole, ancillary and CCTV surveys.
  • Scope and manage short term flow surveys.
  • Carry out a targeted Model Build and Verification as per SW DAS specifications. This also involves analysing and collating survey data was well as updating the hydraulic model with this data.
  • Undertake a full Needs Assessment and present to key Stakeholders.
  • Develop Options to solve any issues derived from the Needs Assessment
  • Liaise with all relevant stakeholders throughout the project life cycle.
  • Prepare reporting in accordance with specification.

FRM Act - Section 16 Assessments

Project background

Under Section 16 of the Flood Risk Management (Scotland) Act 2009 (FRM Act), Scottish Water is required to assess the possible risk of flooding from sewerage systems in areas designated as potentially vulnerable by SEPA through the National Flood Risk Assessment and the subsequent Flood Risk Management Strategies.

  • Review and clean-up DTM and in order to ensure suitability for the 2D modelling assessment.

  • Produce model simulations for range of return periods and storm durations, 1 in 1 year to 1 in 200 year.
  • Extract results and prepare suite of flooding outputs, 1D results, 2D flood extents and depths.

Project background

Caley Water provided Infoworks modelling support to Sweco in deliverying the Hillington, Cardonald and Penilee Surface Water Management Plan (SWMP) for Glasgow City Council and Renfrewshire Council.

Service Provided

- Thorough review of Hydraulic Model in order to ensure suitability for the study.

- 1D and 2D modelling of seperate and dual drainage systems and watercourses in InfoWorks ICM.

Haddington DAS

Project background

Caley Water, in conjunction with Stantec, were commisioned to undertake the Haddington Drainage Area Study (DAS), the objective being to provide Scottish Water (SW) with a hydraulic model that can be used to review catchment performance, identify deficiencies and ultimately support investment decisions.

- Review existing data and undertake due diligence check on hydraulic model provided to determine suitability and critical areas within the model.

- Plan and manage manhole, ancillary, CCTV, rainfall and flow surveys.

- Analyse RADAR rainfall in conjunction with rainfall survey.

Galashiels - ICS

Project background

Caley Water were commissioned to complete an Integrated Catchment Study Planning exercise, followed by a model build in InfoWorks ICM for the Galashiels study area.
