At Caley Water, we believe that great engineering comes from great teams—and great teams are built through shared experiences. Every year, our Edinburgh-based crew take a break from environmental modelling, water strategy, and infrastructure design to head into the wilds of the Scottish Highlands for our annual bothy trip. This year’s destination: the remote and beautiful Badrallach, tucked between rugged hills and sweeping coastal views.
The day began early, with rucksacks packed, boots laced, and the team ready for six hours of hill walking. The route wound through classic Highland terrain—peat tracks, heather-covered slopes, and the occasional stream crossing to keep things interesting. As we climbed higher, the views opened up over Little Loch Broom and the surrounding peaks. It was the sort of landscape that reminds us why protecting Scotland’s natural environment is at the heart of the work we do.
The walk was as much about camaraderie as it was about the journey. Conversations ranged from project updates and technical challenges to weekend plans and sheer appreciation of the scenery. These moments outside the office bring a different kind of collaboration—one built on shared effort, fresh air, and the simple joy of being miles from anywhere.

By late afternoon, the bothy finally came into view. Modest and remote, the Badrallach bothy offered exactly what we needed: shelter, a fire, and space to unwind. Once inside, layers were shed, boots were swapped for warm socks, and the stove was put to work heating the room. Soon, hot food, steaming mugs, and well-earned rest filled the space.
As the evening settled in, stories were exchanged, headtorches flickered, and laughter echoed against the bothy’s stone walls. With no Wi-Fi and no distractions, it was a reminder of how valuable true disconnection can be—especially in a field where data, modelling, and constant communication shape our day-to-day work.
The annual bothy trip is more than an outdoor tradition. It reinforces what makes Caley Water unique: a team that values the environment not just professionally but personally. Being immersed in the Highlands strengthens our understanding of the landscapes we help protect and enhances the sense of purpose behind our engineering solutions.
Another year, another unforgettable journey—and we’re already looking forward to the next one.
